On August 19, 2011, the first cycle of Mozambique's application process to the Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (EITI) came to an end. The EITI Council1 decided to reject our country's candidacy due to the lack of compliance with six of the eighteen indicators that make up the validation matrix that must be fulfilled by any country that wants to become a full member (or compliant, in the official jargon ) of that initiative in a period of two years. In the Mozambican case, the period ran from May 14, 2009 to May 14, 2011.
The application was disapproved, but the process does not end with this disapproval, and because there are aspects that should be improved in the next phase, one of which is the maximum possible dissemination and public discussion of the EITI and its contours, the Public Integrity Center2 share here some notes for public debate.
