The significant discoveries of mineral resources, with special emphasis on the natural gas reserves in the Rovuma basin in Cabo Delgado, are accompanied by huge expectations of structural transformation of the economy and improvement in the population's well-being.
It is projected that with the production of liquefied natural gas (LNG) economic activity will grow at an average rate of more than 8% and contribute to the state's coffers with more than one million dollars a year.
However, the effectiveness of the above depends largely on the adoption of good practices and concrete strategies to maximize gains in this sector.
Among the main strategies in adopting good practices, transparency and accountability are seen as the crucial instruments to avoid a possible resource curse. Information is seen as the crucial factor in promoting transparency and accountability.
It is also generally agreed that the media are an effective platform through which information is disseminated. It is therefore imperative that the media are provided with correct information and in a timely manner to ensure that their role in transmitting it is effective.
In this context, the Center for Public Integrity (CIP), in partnership with the Institute for Social Communication in Southern Africa (MISA), is promoting training and debate sessions for journalists in matters of extractive industry in Maputo.
