CIP denounces corruption and tax evasion in tourism in Vilanculos

Entrepreneurs in the tourism sector are those involved in the schemes, in particular the group that manages the construction company SHM and those that manage the Águia Negra and Pescador tourist complexes, reveals the investigation released yesterday by the Center for Public Integrity, CIP. The business group has not channeled nor is tax charged to the State coffers. According to the CIP, tourist entrepreneurs have relations with the local authorities in Vilanculos and take advantage of this fact to avoid paying taxes. “The contribution (from tourism) falls far short of expectations. Tourism, which is one of the main economic activities in Inhambane province, contributes only five percent of the province's overall contribution. It is surpassed by activities such as agriculture, transport and fishing. This is a result of poor revenue collection in the tourism sector”, said Borges Nhambire, CIP researcher, who spoke yesterday after the public presentation of the civil society organization's research report.
