The FRELIMO party was implicated in a US court today as having received money from hidden debts. An FBI agent presented the jury with documents proving that the Frelimo party received $10 million of hidden debts in March, May, June and July 2014. This is not the first time that the ruling party has been named as a direct beneficiary of the hidden debts and the evidence presented by the FBI agent are very strong: transfer bordereaux containing bank details, bank account hours. In Mozambique, Frelimo has been mentioned in court several times as beneficiaries of corruption money. One of the recent cases was in Aeroportos de Moçambique in which the defendant said that part of the embezzled money was used to rehabilitate the party's school. In the case of INSS, Helena Taipo also said that part of the embezzled was to finance the Frelimo campaign.
The CIP starts to monitor the judgment of hidden debts in the USA, through a researcher present in court. From now on, we will share details of the trial of the biggest financial scandal in the country and in Africa. Monitoring the judgment of hidden debts is part of CIP's work to combat corruption through the exposure of public servants' misconduct and citizen awareness through evidence-based advocacy.
