Civil society organizations, meeting on November 19 and 20, 2019, in Maputo City, discussed, among various issues, the compensation mechanisms and benefits granted to communities covered by projects in the mining and oil extraction sector in Mozambique.
In the case of Mozambique, the legislation that disciplines and regulates the exercise of rights and duties relating to the communities that host extractive sector projects is managed under the laws in force, namely, Law n ̊. 20/2014 (which approves the Mining Law) and Law 21/2014 (which approves the Petroleum Law) both dated 18 August. These laws define that a percentage of the income generated in these activities must be channeled or shared in the form of benefits for development projects of the communities directly covered by the respective projects.
