The Government, through the Minister of Economy and Finance, announced on March 23, 2020, that the country needs around USD 703 million to face the COVID-19 pandemic, currently with three confirmed positive cases.
The CIP is aware that if this pandemic affects Mozambique, in the proportions in which it has reached countries like China, Italy and Spain, the Mozambican Government, with its own financial resources, will not be able to deal with the pandemic. However, the Governments of Mozambique before and even today have a history of mismanagement of funds and opportunism that spills over into corruption whenever natural disasters occur. The lack so far of a public contingency plan with the main lines of the measures to be taken and the budget foreseen in detail, raises suspicions about the Government's intentions, hence the CIP demands its publication.
