The extractive sector has been seen as an important factor in boosting Mozambique's economy. Despite the great potential and considerable growth, the mining sector is seen as a sector in which occupational diseases frequently occur, mainly diseases related to respiratory conditions, which places its workers in the group at greatest risk of contamination by COVID-19 .
More than 70% of workers residing in the communities suffer from some respiratory illness and 68% contracted the illness as part of their work in mining.
At the level of the communities that live around the projects, around 30% have someone in their family who suffers from respiratory diseases associated with mining.
This fact places these two groups more vulnerable to the contraction of Covid-19.
