The Mozambican government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Total E&P Mozambique Area 1 for a joint force to guarantee the safety of the French multinational Total's consortium's natural gas project in Cabo Delgado.
Total signed the MoU with the Government whose main objective is to respond to the conflict in the area in which it operates. If, on the one hand, their concerns regarding this issue are noticeable, because their operations are concentrated in the Afungi peninsula in the district of Palma, and may be vulnerable to potential attacks, on the other hand, it is understood that any initiative by the Government to contain the insurgency in that province must be comprehensively designed.
Therefore, the CIP recommends greater coordination between the Government and companies in the extractive sector in particular and the private sector in general, through the establishment of a platform (task-force) that is more comprehensive, than through the Chamber of Mines and Oil and Gas or another that is more efficient.
