About 670,000 people were forced from their homes due to the armed conflict in Cabo Delgado. Of these, 570,000 (85%) found refuge within Cabo Delgado province and around 64,000 (9.5%) in neighboring Nampula province, making both provinces shelter around 95% of all displaced persons. The remaining 5% are found in the rest of the country, with the majority in the provinces of Niassa and Zambézia. These data refer to the period prior to March 24, 2021, when the insurgents attacked Vila Sede in the District of Palma, forcing thousands of people to flee. With the attack on Palma, the number of displaced people may have exceeded 700,000.
The Public Integrity Center (CIP) carried out field research in Cabo Delgado and Nampula provinces to find out how and where displaced people live. The survey was carried out in February in Cabo Delgado and in March in Nampula.
