Mozambique registers stagnation in the transparency of extractive contracts

After an intense campaign led by civil society aiming at the transparency of the contracts signed with multinationals in the extractive sector, for the exploration of mineral resources in Mozambique, the Mozambican government started to publish the contracts on December 3, 2013. In this context, all the Existing hydrocarbon sector contracts were published, as well as some from the mining sector.

The start of publication of the contracts was announced in parliament by the former Minister of Mineral Resources, Esperança Bias, who at the time was the chairman of the Coordination Committee of the Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative in Mozambique (EITI). The news pleasantly surprised the members of civil society who are part of the initiative's coordination committee.
