EXTRACTIVE INDUSTRY TRANSPARENCY INDEX 2019-2020

EXTRACTIVE INDUSTRY TRANSPARENCY INDEX 2019-2020

Transparency is one of the fundamental elements to guarantee the good governance of natural resources. Despite the relevant instruments for promoting transparency in the country, such as the Right to Information Law, Law 34/2014 of 31 December, which establishes legal mechanisms for the right to information and the fact that Mozambique is part of the global Transparency Initiative in Extractive Industry (EITI), considerable gaps in the provision of crucial information for ensuring transparency and accountability prevail.

In this context, and in order to contribute to greater transparency in this sector, CIP built a Transparency Index for Companies in the Extractive Sector whose indicators revolve around the fiscal, corporate, social and environmental governance components.

The first edition of the ITSE (ITSE 2019-2020) refers to the years 2019 and 2020. The index built, brings an analysis of the information made available on the websites of 12 companies in the Mozambican extractive sector that demonstrated that, in general, the transparency of the sector is at low levels standing at 29 points out of a universe of 100 points.

For this edition Kenmare Moma Mining, with 65 points, proved to be the most transparent company in the sector. The title of least transparent company was awarded to the Mozambican Exploration Mining Company (EMEM) with 4 points.

The partial results of the indicators that make up the general index also show that there are challenges to be overcome by companies in making information of public interest available in order to improve the overall transparency of the sector.
